The Mother Ship Has Landed

It would be June 2nd that I hugged my Mom for the last time in WI, as a WI resident. Being of the sentimental type personality, every minute spent with her during that last day was precious to me.  I knew that leaving WI would mean that I would be asking my Mom to travel more to see me, and the obvious less time together. Not a decision brought lightly, but I was happy that she supported my decision in following my dreams.

It would be two days ago, September 20th, that again I would see her sweet face. As I counted down the minutes to when I would see the RV pull in, I felt my heart beat faster as I knew that this was the moment I had waited for all summer.  Bob, my Step-Dad, drove down our street, and then backed in- and I ran out of the house, tears in my eyes, and practically wanting to break down the door. They parked and as we all waited for the door to open, my Mom spent 5 minutes trying to figure out how to unlock it.  The suspense was killing me, but well worth the wait as she opened the door and I had that hug I needed since we left.  She cried, I cried, and the kids hugged her as well.  We hugged Bob, we talked a mile a minute, and we settled into the house after a long awaited tour.

I could barely sleep knowing she was here- I tell you, I love my Mom, but I had no idea I would be so emotional and so excited for her arrival.  Craig smiled at me in bed and said “Can you believe she is finally here?” and I smiled and said “No, I can’t.”  It would be a restless night, but I woke up so excited yet nervous that it was all a dream she came at all.

We got out early and headed to Wal-Mart to grocery shop first- life was complete again as we had done this many times together before. I felt so good, and I kept looking at her and smiling.  We bought lots of goodies to make and eat, including a fabulous carpet for the living room.  After we dropped it all off at home, as this is FL and NOTHING should ever stay in your car that is edible, we hunted for Thrift Shops on my side of town. But first, lunch at Taco Bell where we laughed at the birds who wanted to come in to eat as well.

We found a couple from just asking people from one store to another, and even found a great lamp for the living room. Not exhausted yet, we picked up Kyra from school and then headed to The Loop shopping area. We had finally arrived to Kohls, what we shopped a million times together in WI, and I was so happy.  We bought pillows, new clothes, and then grabbed some new sandals at Famous Footwear. My shoes were so worn out from wearing that at Bristol, that I needed a new pair pretty bad.  We enjoyed a small cherry treat at Panera Bread while we chatted over sodas.

As storms rolled in, we high tailed it out of there and hit Target where we found nothing. The rest of the night was spent chatting and watching Survivor together- a favorite show of ours.  We discussed plans for the week, and through a great friend, we scored some cheaper Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party tickets for next Tuesday- so Mom, Bob, and I will be painting the Magic Kingdom orange. Mom is also taking Kyra to Universal Studios this weekend to enjoy Harry Potter for the first time- Kyra is super happy to go.  We all went to bed happy from a great day.

Today Mom and I got up early, and after everyone was settled, we headed out to the Mall of Millenia and IKEA.  Since everyone has to experience IKEA in Orlando once, we headed there first, to find out that they don’t open until 9:30 a.m. We decided to check out the Mall next to it and even though they didn’t open until 10 a.m. either, we got to walk it and see what was there. It was so beautiful, seriously it may be the prettiest Mall I have ever seen.  I was so excited to find Hallmark, Bath and Body, and The Body Shop.  It was peaceful to walk it while nothing was open, and it really did help me decide if it was worth revisiting again.

At 9:30 a.m. we headed to IKEA where they serve a free breakfast during the week day mornings from 9:30-10:00 a.m. We followed up the crowd to the cafeteria area, and grabbed a plate of bacon, eggs, and hashbrowns- even the coffee was free! We ate like Queens on our free meal, and then hit the store with a ton of energy. We found so many good deals, and came away with a car full of goodies.

We then hit the Mall of Millenia for some shopping and lunch.  I found a deal at Bath and Body where I grabbed some Pumpkin wallflowers at 2 for $5. Next was tackling Hallmark to check out the Christmas ornaments that I hadn’t seen yet- just WOW!!  I saw an UP ornament that I have to get for Craig, and if you read the blog last year, you will know why I want to get it for him.  Several Disney ones were available and we always pick up a couple each year to add to our collection.

Lunch was at the Gourmet Grill, which was located in the food court. It was delicious- Honey Mustard Chicken in a sauce with mushrooms and peppers, with a side salad and a drink.  It was refreshing to have a home cooked type meal from a fast food place- always nice to find something new.

After lunch we headed out to pick up Kyra from school, then headed to Sams Club. I was so happy that I could find everything on my own and that I was feeling super confident about driving around. Maybe its Mom being here, but I felt so empowered by driving everywhere these past couple of days that I felt like a new person.  Not knowing where you are going can be a terrifying thing, but once you get the hang of it, it all starts to feel natural.

We grilled brats tonight for dinner and enjoyed watching TV together. As I blog, Emily and her Nana are playing dolls together, love that she does that with her. Tomorrow is another wonderful day with Mom and I am so happy that I have this time with her. God bless your evening!

  1. 🙂 This brought such a smile to my face Amy, and tears to my eyes…

So happy to hear you are enjoying your time with your Mom…I know it’s been long awaited!! Enjoy every day!! Cant wait to hear about all your adventures this weekend and next week!! 🙂

  2. You seem like you are having an absolutely fabulous time with your mom. Like I mentioned on a post on FB, we love when my mom visits us too. She lives in Massachusetts and we are from CT and moved here 3 years ago today! We still get homesick especially in the fall when we used to go to all the great state fairs and the spectacle called the Big E in Springfield, Mass. We are hoping mom will come back for the holidays! Just wanted to mention that we live only two traffic lights from the Loop and we go there ALL the time. It’s a very clean, safe, nice place to shop. My mom’s favorite shopping area here is the Mall at Millenia. She asks us to take her there on every visit. I still hope we can meet up some time. Enjoy your mom’s visit and savor every minute of it!!

  3. I’m so glad you are enjoying your visit with your mom! I also shop at the Loop and Mall at Millenia. Isn’t it great when you finally figure out the roads around here! I know you will have the time of your life this week with your mom! Hope you enjoy every min of the fun and activites with her and your family. It sounds like we are neighbors because I live right around the corner in Celebration. Would love to meet you sometime in the parks! Just love reading your blog!

  4. Happy that your mom made it safely!

I completely understand the feeling of anticipation of mom coming to visit. My mom will be here in approx. 4 weeks and I cannot wait. I am glad to hear that you are feeling more comfortable on the roads around here. I know that was my biggest hurdle 6 years ago was just learning my way around.

We need to get together soon. =)

  5. I was so happy to meet your mother and Bob tonight. And it makes me thrilled to know how happy you are having her in town. I can tell you’ve already had some awesome times shopping in Central Florida and know that there are plenty more wonderful memories to be made in the next week or so. Thank you, Ames, for sharing your adventures with us. Hope to see you again soon!

  6. Sorry we missed you at Lou’s meet last night :(. Friends from Wisconsin are here and we were meeting them at the Polynesian for dinner and watching the fireworks from the Poly beach.

  7. How wonderful!!! I’m so glad that “Mom” got to visit you and empower you in such a great way! You’re doing awesome in your new surroundings Ames!!
