The Most Haunted City in Illinois…The Alton Cemetery
Of course a haunted town has to have haunted cemeteries right? Well they have several! First I headed to Alton Cemetery, located on Monument Avenue. The big deal here is the Elijah P. Lovejoy Monument, in honor of the freedom fighter for the abolition of slavery. He would write anti-slavery editorials and had THREE of his printing presses thrown into the Mississippi River. Unfortunately his fight for the better of man would lead to his death by an angry mob in 1837. His monument is absolutely beautiful, but just a heads up that his grave is actually located on the other side of the Cemetery with a fence around it. This Cemetery was something else- rolling hills, lots of headstones on top of each other, and very old. Lot’s of births in the early 1800’s, giving a creepy vibe to this place.
