Our 29th Anniversary Dinner at “Twin Owls Steakhouse” in Estes Park, Colorado
The Mountains, what calls us there? Is it their sheer size that makes our mouths drop in wonder, or is the secrets they hold in every living, breathing thing? The first time I saw them, I couldn’t stop staring. I remember I had to run to McDonalds during my road trip in Colorado Springs and as I exited, I just kept smiling from ear to ear. An older couple was eating outside, and I smiled and said, “It’s my first-time seeing Mountains” and without missing a beat, the older gentleman said “Well, we have a lot of them.” Whether it was my first time in Colorado, or this being my third, the backdrop of such majesty on an important monument in my life, and Craig’s, was just utter perfection.
I knew I wanted to take Craig somewhere super special for our 29th wedding anniversary. We had been through a lot these last couple of years, and with a lot of hard work, love, and dedication to making ourselves better people to life with, we were going to celebrate in one of our favorite places on Earth. I began researching before I left, reading reviews, googling “Romantic restaurants in Estes Park” and so on until I came across “Twin Owls Steakhouse” located in the Taharaa Mountain Lodge– named for the large rock formation of twin owls nearby. We found most of the best Restaurants seemed to be located in the many beautiful hotels and lodges peppered amongst the landscape of Estes Park. I was able to book online for September 14th at 6:00 p.m., look at their menu beforehand (One of my FAVORITE things on the Internet, menus at your fingertips!), and also check price point. I didn’t care what I spent; I just didn’t want sticker shock. It was our Anniversary AND Craig’s Birthday, which we have lovingly referred to, for 29 years, as our “Birthiversary.” So, it was a big day, price wasn’t going to deter us.
Since we were staying in Estes Park, the drive was a mere 8 minutes away. We were more downtown, and the Taharaa Mountain Lodge was located more at the bottom of the Mountains edge- seriously breathtaking. We had planned to dress up a little more, but we were sore and exhausted from our adventures to the Rockies earlier that day, so we went with casual and comfortable. The rain started as we headed to the jeep, putting us both is a mood, wanting oh so much the evening to be perfect. But I have had to learn, things are not always what they seem, let the rain come, because better usually comes after.
After getting a bit wet running into the Restaurant, we tried to shake off the rain literally, and warm up to the coziness of their cute little lobby area. We didn’t have to wait long, our table was ready, and we were so floored when we saw they had reserved us this cozy corner, window view of the Mountains, with flowers and cards wishing us a Happy Anniversary and Craig a Happy Birthday- soo sweet! I don’t know about y’all, but table placement is SOOOO important for big events when you go out to eat. You don’t want to be crammed in somewhere there is so much noise or foot traffic you can’t enjoy your company, so I was super happy and surprised by our table.
We started off our celebration with two mint mojitos, made with Sprite always, which were DELICIOUS!! No appetizers, we each ordered the 7 oz. Filet Mignon, which came with a side of fresh green beans. We added the house mashed potatoes, and ALWAYS a side of sauteed mushrooms and onions on top of our steak. If places offer, more times than not we get the mushrooms and onions, that combo with butter is so delicious!! I cannot tell you how amazing this meal was, but I am going to try. The mashed potatoes were light and fluffy, full of taste with just the right amount of butter. The steak was perfect, always get mine medium rare, Craig gets medium, and it just melted in our mouths. We usually get steak sauce, but when it’s done right, you don’t need it. The sauteed mushrooms and onions were the perfect addition, each bite a symphony in your mouth. If they asked me, what meal would you want the rest of your life, this would be the one.
As the rain started to lessen, Craig and I discussed the rest of our week, the year, and our lives. We looked fondly back at so many amazing memories made together, and so proud of being there, in that moment, together. And as if God himself was listening, the clouds parted, and a beautiful rainbow started to appear. Like watching a movie, it slowly started, then got brighter and brighter. Amongst the Mountains, I feared I may have died and this was certainly Heaven. We both beamed with happiness, so in love with each other and our lives, it was an amazing moment both of us will never forget.
My man loves him some carrot cake, I also am a huge fan of it. So when we saw it on the menu, it was a done deal. They brought it to him with a lit candle, and we sang him Happy Birthday quietly. (He does NOT like attention). With our last bites, about an hour later, we had full bellies with full hearts. Everything was spectacular, the waitress was AMAZING, we tipped her very well, and left knowing we would love to come back some day.
As if things couldn’t get any better, on the way back to our Lodge, a family of Elk crossed our path, and we were just stunned to see them so close. A baby with its parents, I assume, was such a cool sight to see. With the sun setting behind the Rockies as the backdrop, it was just incredible. Perfect ending to a perfect day.
So if you are in the area of Estes Park, or just driving through, I HIGHLY encourage you to check out this amazing Steakhouse. Reservations are recommended, as it is VERY popular, but they also do take-out AND delivery! I cannot sing my praises higher for this Restaurant, the food, and the staff. Thank you for making our celebration so memorable, we will see you in the future.
